Week 1 is all about prep work. What kit will you work on? Do you need any additional fabric? What tools will you need? We will go through these topics in this week’s post!
I want to buy a kit... Any ideas?
Absolutely! Here are a few of my favorites, some from Fat Quarter Shop and a few from our shop. If these aren’t your jam, Fat Quarter Shop has oodles of kits that you can look through!
The Ten Years of Magic quilt kit is modern and gorgeous! I want one for myself!
This Pom Pom quilt kit features Motley by Guicy Guice and is a quick and easy make!
The Adore quilt kit is so sweet and full of stars. This kit would be great for beginners!
I’m in love with this Berry Season quilt kit! The berries look so sweet and yummy!
The Glam quilt kit is another beginner-friendly kit with a big impact!
I want to use my stash, but I need a pattern!
Awesome! Here are a few of my favorite fat quarter-friendly patterns that might fit the bill! If not, Fat Quarter Shop has a ton that could work too!
I have my kit... now what?
Great! Now that you have your kit, it’s time to figure out if you need any additional fabric. Do you need backing fabric? Batting? Binding? Do you want to swap out any fabrics in your kit? If you need backing, check out my favorite shop for widebacks, Modern Quilter! They have a huge selection, and widebacks are so easy to use for your backing!
Now is also the time to consider if you need any other quilting supplies before we get going next week. A new rotary cutter blade, new needles for your sewing machine? Here is a quick list that you can review to see if you need anything before next week.
- Fresh rotary cutter blades
- Sewing machine cleaning tools (start with a clean machine!)
- New sewing machine needles
- Diagonal seam tape
- My favorite quality thread
- A comfortable seam ripper (just in case!)
- Stripology ruler, for cutting lots of squares or rectangles
- Perfect HST/QST Ruler, for kits with lots of half-square triangles
- Ultimate Flying Geese Trimmer, for kits with lots of flying geese
- The HuRty, for kits with lots of half-rectangle triangles
- Omnigrid square ruler set, for squaring up blocks
- An iron that gets nice and hot (this one is my favorite)
- Pressing supplies, such as starch and/or a tailor clapper
Once the QAL is done and your top is made, will you need any supplies for finishing your quilt? Here’s another list that you may need at that time.
Once you have gathered all your supplies, you’re all set for cutting next week! See you then!
