As we look ahead to 2025, the quilting community continues to blend the timeless with the innovative, bringing fresh ideas into the craft. Whether you’re drawn to tradition or modern techniques, the upcoming trends promise something for everyone. Here’s a look at what’s on the horizon for quilting in 2025.

Modern Traditionalism

A continued fusion of the past and present, Modern Traditionalism will remain strong in 2025. This trend is all about taking classic quilt blocks and giving them a fresh twist with updated color palettes, layouts, and techniques. Think of those beloved log cabins or flying geese blocks, but with a fresh, dynamic composition. I have a quilt that will be released at Quiltcon that falls into this category – it’s a beautiful medallion quilt. Keep a look out because I can’t wait to share it with you!

Sustainable Quilting

Sustainability is at the forefront of many quilters’ minds. With environmental concerns influencing consumer behavior, quilters are making choices that are eco-friendly. This includes using scraps, repurposing fabrics, and exploring natural dyes. Sustainable quilting also includes investing in high-quality tools that last, rather than disposable supplies. I find myself often reaching for those reusable quilting templates to cut down on waste!

Bold Geometrics

Big, striking shapes are on the rise. Bold geometric designs are taking center stage, transforming quilts into works of art. These quilts focus on large, impactful shapes—circles, triangles, and hexagons—placed in modern layouts that create movement across the quilt. If you’ve been itching to experiment with dramatic shapes and layouts, 2025 is the perfect time to start. The new collection of fabric Kaleidoscope by Annabel Wrigley is a fabulous example of this and I think we will start to see more things like this.

Hand Quilting Revival

There’s been a resurgence in hand quilting, with more quilters embracing the art form for its meditative quality and the textured, organic look it creates. I’ve been incorporating hand quilting into my own Cozy SAL (sew-along) project, and it’s such a satisfying way to blend hand quilting with practicality. We’re also seeing the rise of big stitch quilting—larger, more deliberate stitches that add charm and a homemade feel. Think sashiko style stitching with the intention of highlighting certain pieced elements of the quilt.

Color Blocking

A fresh way to play with color in your quilts is color blocking—using large blocks of solid colors to create a bold visual impact. This trend allows quilters to play with negative space and contrast, using color as the focal point of the design. It’s a simple yet effective way to create modern, striking quilts.

Textured Fabrics

Adding dimension to quilts is becoming more popular, with quilters seeking out textured fabrics like wovens, linens, velvet, and chambray to elevate their projects. These fabrics introduce new tactile elements, making quilts not only visually interesting, but also delightful to touch. Mixing these textures into your quilt can add that extra “wow” factor.

Improv Quilting

Letting go of structure and embracing creativity is at the heart of improv quilting. This freeform style allows quilters to create without predefined patterns or rules. With a focus on spontaneity, improv quilts often have asymmetry, unexpected color combinations, and innovative compositions. It’s a fun way to let your artistic side loose!

Monochrome Quilts

On the opposite end of the spectrum from bold, colorful designs, monochrome quilts are having a moment. These quilts focus on a single color palette, using subtle variations in tone and shade to create depth and interest. Whether it’s a calming blue or a vibrant red, monochrome quilts allow quilters to explore the nuances of a single hue.

Nature-Inspired Quilts

Nature continues to inspire quilters, with nature-inspired themes taking on new life in 2025. From earthy color palettes to quilt designs mimicking landscapes, florals, or wildlife, the connection between quilting and the outdoors remains strong. These quilts often feature natural elements, bringing the beauty of the outdoors into our homes.

Minimalist Quilting

Less is more in the world of minimalist quilting, where simplicity and clarity take precedence. These quilts feature clean lines, minimal color palettes, and thoughtful negative space. The minimalist approach is about focusing on precision and intentionality, creating quilts that are both serene and sophisticated.

With trends like hand quilting, bold designs, and sustainable practices leading the way, 2025 promises to be a year of growth, creativity, and connection for quilters. Whether you’re diving into new techniques or continuing with a cozy sew-along like my Cozy SAL, there’s something for every quilter to explore in the coming year. Which trend are you most excited to try?
