If you’re looking for a fun, quick quilting project, quilt-as-you-go patchwork potholders are the perfect choice! This project is beginner-friendly, doesn’t require much fabric, and adds a lot of charm to your kitchen or makes great gifts. Let’s dive right in and create some adorable potholders with this simple technique!

Materials:

  • (7) 2 ½” x 15″ fabric strips

  • (1) 9½” x 12½“of fabric for the back

  • 1 piece of Insul Bright batting (8½” x 10½“) or 2 cotton batting

  • (1) 2 ½” x WOF (width of fabric) for Binding

  • Sewing machine

  • Rotary cutter and cutting mat

  • Iron and ironing board

  • Thread (matching or contrasting)

  • Pins or fabric clips

  • Quilting ruler (optional)

Patchwork Assembly

Layer your backing and batting as shown in the image below with the backing wrong side up and the batting on top. If you are using 2 pieces of cotton, stack them one on top of the other.

Take your fabric strips and arrange one of them diagonally down the center from corner to corner.

Take a second strip and layer it, right side together, on top of your first strip as shown in the image below.

Sew ¼” along on the right edge of the strips. Press the top strip open to reveal the right side of the strips.

Repeat this with a 3rd strip on top of the 2nd strip as shown in the image below. Continue this process until the entire right half of the batting is covered. Then repeat the process for the left half.

Trim to size

Using a ruler and rotary cutter, trim your pot holder to 8½” x 10½” .

Binding

Fold binding in half lengthwise, wrong sides together, and press. Sew the binding to the front side of the pot holder starting at any side. YOu can join the ends of the binding or fold them as shown below. Turn the binding over and hand stitch or machine sew to the back of the pot holder.

Enjoy!
