Week 1 is all about cutting. But before you get started, do you need any additional fabric? What tools will you need? We will go through these topics in this week’s post!
I have my kit... now what?
Great! Now that you have your kit, it’s time to figure out if you need any additional fabric. Do you need backing fabric? Batting? Binding? Do you want to swap out any fabrics in your kit? If you need backing, check out my favorite shop for widebacks, Modern Quilter! They have a huge selection, and widebacks are so easy to use for your backing!
Now is also the time to consider if you need any other quilting supplies before we get too far down the line. A new rotary cutter blade, new needles for your sewing machine? Here is a quick list that you can review to see if you need anything.
- Fresh rotary cutter blades
- Sewing machine cleaning tools (start with a clean machine!)
- New sewing machine needles
- Diagonal seam tape
- My favorite quality thread
- A comfortable seam ripper (just in case!)
- Stripology ruler, for cutting lots of squares or rectangles
- Mini Stripology Ruler, for kits with lots of half-square triangles
- Ultimate Flying Geese Trimmer, for kits with lots of flying geese
- The HuRty, for kits with lots of half-rectangle triangles
- Omnigrid square ruler set, for squaring up blocks
- An iron that gets nice and hot (this one is my favorite)
- Pressing supplies, such as starch and/or a tailor clapper
Once your top is made, will you need any supplies for finishing your quilt? Here’s another list that you may need at that time.
Once you have gathered all your supplies, you’re all set for cutting! Let’s get started!
