Nothing says cozy season quite like a piping-hot bowl of homemade soup, but burned fingers and chilly hands can quickly spoil the comfort. In this post, we’re stitching up custom quilted bowl cozies designed to keep your soup steaming and your lap safe from heat. Pair your fresh sewing project with our go-to fall soup recipe for a complete autumn afternoon experience—combining quick-finish patchwork with a warm, comforting bowl meant to be enjoyed right out of the microwave.

Why You Need a Microwave-Safe Quilted Bowl Cozy

If you’ve ever tried balancing a scalding ceramic bowl on your lap while curling up under a throw quilt, you already know the struggle. A quilted bowl cozy acts as a form-fitting insulator for your tableware.

Because the cozy wraps securely around the base and sides of your bowl, you can grab hot dishes straight out of the microwave without needing oven mitts or awkward kitchen towels. They are also completely reversible, machine washable, and make incredible handmade holiday gifts or quilt guild swap items.

CRITICAL MICROWAVE SAFETY NOTICE:

When sewing projects intended for microwave use, every single material must be 100% natural cotton. Synthetic fibers like polyester, nylon, or metallic thread will melt or catch fire in the microwave. Always use:

  • 100% Cotton Fabric (pre-washed)
  • 100% Cotton Batting (such as Pellon Wrap-N-Zap — do not use scrim-backed or polyester-blend batting)
  • 100% Cotton Thread

How to Sew a DIY Quilted Bowl Cozy

This project is beginner-friendly and takes less than an hour from cutting table to finish.

Materials Needed

  • (2) 10″ x 10″ squares of 100% cotton fabric
  • (2) 10″ x 10″ squares of 100% cotton batting
  • 100% cotton thread
  • Quilting ruler, rotary cutter, and fabric marking pen

1.Prep and Layer Your Blocks:

Layer each 10″ fabric square right-side-up on top of a 10″ cotton batting square. Smooth out any wrinkles and pin the layers together in the center.

2.Quilt the Base Squares:

Quilt an “X” pattern from corner to corner across both layered squares. This secures the batting and creates the classic quilted texture. Securing the batting with this method ensures it will hold up through many wash dry cycles.

3.Mark and Sew the Darts:

Fold one quilted square in half, right sides together. On both folded edges, mark 1″ in from the fold and 2″ up along the edge. Draw a diagonal line connecting these points and stitch along the line. Trim the seam allowance to 1/4″. Repeat for all four sides on both quilted squares to form three-dimensional bowl shapes.

4.Assemble and Finish:

Place the two 3D bowl pieces right-sides-together, matching the dart seams. Stitch around the outer top edge with a 1/4″ seam allowance, leaving a 3″ opening for turning. Turn the cozy right-side-out, press the edges crisp, and topstitch around the top rim 1/8″ from the edge to close the opening.

The Recipe Pairing:

I love this rich, hearty take on classic Zuppa Toscana has all the creamy, slightly spicy flavors of the one served at your favorite Italian food chain… but lighter!

Ingredients

  • 4 slices Whole30-compliant bacon (sliced into ½-inch pieces)
  • 1 pound Italian sausage (made from below recipe or storebought)
  • ½ teaspoons crushed red pepper flakes
  • 4 medium yellow potatoes (about 1 pound 3 ounces, diced into bite-sized pieces)
  • 1 medium white or yellow onion (diced)
  • 2 tablespoons garlic (minced, about 4 cloves)
  • 4 cups chicken stock
  • ½ bunch kale (stems removed and leaves chopped, 4 cups)
  • 1 13.5-ounce can unsweetened, full-fat coconut milk
  • Salt and pepper (to taste)

Homemade Whole30 Italian Sausage

  • 1 pound ground pork
  • 1 tablespoon red wine vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon fresh chopped parsley (or 2 teaspoons dried)
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon dried basil
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1 teaspoon red pepper flakes
  • ¼ teaspoon ground fennel seed (optional)
  • pinch dried oregano
  • pinch dried thyme

Instructions

  • If making Italian sausage: combine all ingredients in a bowl and mix well. Alternately, combine all ingredients in the saucepan and stir well when browning.
  • In a Dutch oven or heavy-bottomed medium pot over medium heat, add Italian sausage and sprinkle crushed red pepper flakes over. Use a spoon to break up the pieces. When browned and cooked through, drain and set aside.
  • Cook the bacon pieces in the same Dutch oven over medium heat until crisp, about 5-10 minutes. Remove the crisp bacon and set aside – don’t get rid of the bacon fat! Stir in the onions and garlic; cook until onions are soft and translucent, about 5 minutes.
  • Pour the chicken broth into the Dutch oven with the onions and garlic, and bring to a boil over high heat. Add the potatoes, and boil until fork tender, about 10-20 minutes. Reduce the heat to medium and stir in the coconut milk and the cooked sausage; heat through. Add the bacon and the kale into the soup just before serving and cook ’til the kale is bright green and softened. Add salt and pepper to taste.
